This Week in Choir

Hello Choir Families,

We had another amazing week in choir.  Students got a lot of work done on their projects, we took a music theory test, and Studio performed for Mrs. Letourneau’s core class!  Our cabinets have been removed and the new ones are in house.  Unfortunately the carpenter is getting married and can’t install them until he’s back from his honeymoon :)  So you won’t get to see them at Open House.  BUT  Our sound studio will be completed so you can stop by and take a peek.

Theory Test

I cannot begin to express how impressed I am with our students!  This week we took a very difficult theory test and more than half of the kids in every class got A’s.  We even had a few A+ which shocked me.  I did not learn most of this information until college, so huge shout out to those students who did well.  If your student did not do well, do not freak out!  Like I said it was a very hard test and the students who have been in choir longer did better.  If they don’t get it yet, they will.  It did not affect anyone’s grade in a meaningful way.  I use this as a way to develop our sight reading and listening skills, and to challenge and empower our music leaders.

Studio Singers Sweeps at Luther

Congratulations to Studio Singers!  They traveled to Luther Burbank this weekend and won Best Music, Best Show, and 1st place.  Lucy Simoneaux took home best performer and Charlotte and Clara were amazing in the solo division.  The girls had a great day overall and represented us well in all aspects on and off stage.  We are so proud of their work and we really appreciate all of the parents who came out to support.

Angels Game

Tickets are now on sale for this fun event.  Students will be singing the national anthem on the field at Angels Stadium on May 3.  This is an optional event and students who participate will have to sell at least three tickets.  This will include a performer ticket for themselves and 2 spectator tickets.  You can sell as many as you want and the choir will get a kick back from the Angels based on the number of tickets we sell.  Invite your friends and family for a night of baseball.  Students will find their own way to the game and parents will be responsible for them as soon as they are done performing.  Detailed schedule and pricing can be found here

Anyone cleaning out your garage this weekend? We are using old/ugly canvas frames to make sound panels in our new Sound Studio.  If you happen to have anything in your garage or see a large piece at a thrift store, please send it in.  The bigger the better.

This Week in Choir

Hello Choir Families,

Xtravaganza!!!!

We had a night of highs and lows.  All of the groups were incredible and performed the best they’ve been all year.  The competition was highly competitive, and scores were very close in every category.  Studio, Soul Men, and Sound Waves all got second place, and Studio and Soul Men took home “Best Music” of which I am incredibly proud.  The results were not entirely what we expected given the outstanding performances we witnessed, but sometimes that’s just how it goes.  We win and lose with grace, and use the judges comments to continue to improve our craft.  Congratulations to Yanet Anteneh, Azayla Usher-Holland, and Silas Willes for winning best performer!  Shout out to all of the boys who came early to support the girls and to the girls who came back at 10:00pm to support the boys!  It was a really fun night of community.

All District Choral Festival
Wow! what an amazing night.  Our students rocked it on stage!  I was so proud of how well they represented our program.  The elementary choirs were great and sooooo big!  I'm excited to have many of your younger kids coming up the ranks.  It was also inspiring to see the high school choir perform-especially my daughter and my former students. Xtreme and the all boys number are always one of my favorites and the all girls number was so powerful.  Thank you for coming out to support the kids and to our chaperones for keeping the kids safe and orderly throughout the night.

Projects

For our concert in May, students are going to be making music videos.  They will choose songs and record them vocally in our new studio provided through a LAEF grant.  Sixth Sense and Sound Check have begun work on this project and the other groups will begin work next week.

Large Canvas Paintings

We are using old/ugly canvas frames to make sound panels in our new Sound Studio.  If you happen to have anything in your garage or see a large piece at a thrift store, please send it in.  We would like to be up and running with the new studio next week.

Close Harmony Festival for Sound Check has been cancelled.  🙁  Those who have signed up will be issued refunds shortly.

This Week in Choir

Hello Choir Families,

I hope you all enjoyed your week off! The Knott’s trip was great!  One of the best I can remember.  The staff was very impressed with the students and their efficiency on and off stage.  The students were very professional and listened well to instruction.  Everyone checked in on time, no one lost their tickets, no nurse visits, and no drama that I was made aware of!  We had a few minor issues but all were dealt with quickly and everyone had a great time. Thank you so much for prepping your students for this event.  We will officially kick off competition season this Friday at Burbank Blast so strap in.  Soul Men families in particular have a busy next couple of weeks so hold on tight!

Burbank Blast-Soul Men and Studio Singers

Students will be busing to Burbank on Friday, Feb. 28.  They will eat lunch at school, change and board the bus by 1:30 p.m. Teachers have a list of students attending and students are responsible for any work missed because of this event.

Costumes should be brought to school no later than Thursday in a labeled garment bag.  Don’t forget your shoes and undergarments.  We have several missing goggles, and many of the Studio girls did not have correct undergarments at the concert.  Please make sure that is remedied before Friday.

We love for parents to attend but it is not expected. If you do drive up, you may take your child home with you as long as you check out with a chaperone first.  However, one of the best parts of competing is the bus ride, so they are welcome to travel back with the team if they prefer.

You can buy tickets to watch the competition at the link below. When purchasing, you buy a ticket for the entire session (Studio Singers and Soul Men are in the same session, so only one ticket is needed per person). Make sure you purchase your tickets for the correct session and ticket type. We are in “Junior High Bass/Treble - Session 1,” and the ticket should be titled Session 1 for $37. https://www.itsmyseat.com/bhs/

Monday 3/3 Soul Men rehearse with Xtreme 3:45-5:00

XTREME Rehearsal, Monday March 3, 3:45-5:00 High School Choir room

This is a mandatory rehearsal and the boys will be learning a song with Xtreme for the All District Choral Festival.  They will wear their blue choir t-shirts and can bring a friend for extra credit.  The friends will not perform, they will just rehearse to get an idea of what choir would be like if they decided to join next year.

Costumes

Sixth Sense-keep costumes at home for now and air them out.  You will wear them again for All District Choral Festival

Sound Waves-air out your dress but leave it at home for now.  Bring shoes back by Friday for in class rehearsal.

Soul Men-launder and return in a labeled garment bag by this Thursday.  Find your hat and googles, ALL black shoes!

Studio-return in labeled garment bag by this Thursday.  No black bras!!!!!  You must wear nude or clear staps.  We will discuss hair next week.  We are going to try to do it all the same.

Hello Choir Families,

The concert is coming!  We are about a week and a half away.  Please sign up to volunteer or donate.  Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Sunday @ McAuliffeChoir.com.  Pictures, buttons, and break-a-legs are also available for preorder.    Most groups finished learning music and choreography this week and we will have tests next Friday to make sure we are all ready!

Monday Rehearsal! Studio and Soul Men

Don’t forget we have rehearsal Monday morning!  This is mandatory and very important.  We cannot fix blocking and clean choreography without you.  I 100% understand the struggle in arranging this if you work and I appreciate your efforts.  Studio will rehearse 9:00am-10:15 in the dance room and Soul Men will meet at 10:30-12:00.  If your child will not be able to make this rehearsal you should have already emailed me to excuse them.

Sound Waves Wednesday After School

Sound Waves will have a rehearsal/clinic after school on Wednesday Feb. 5th from 2:15-3:30 with Sara Berry.  Sara is an amazing singer and Broadway actress who has worked with us before and often clinics the high school groups.  We are very excited to have her join us and expect all students to be in attendance.  If your child is unable to attend this rehearsal you should have already emailed me to excuse them.

Hello Choir Families,

Thank you so much for all you are doing to make this program a success.  We have had so many volunteers in the past couple of weeks with pictures, costumes closet, glueing, etc.  I also wanted to say thank you to the board and all who attended our meeting on Wednesday.  I will share an abbreviated version of what we discussed and as always, please reach out with any questions.

Knott’s Registration Due Today!

This is an optional performance, and students will miss school that day.  Our performance will be at 11:30 a.m. on the Wagon Camp Stage, and students will have the rest of the day to play on their own in the park.  Tickets are $45, bus fee is $10, and the optional meal/drink pass is $45.  Students who have a 2025 Knott’s pass may use that instead of purchasing the $45 ticket, but all students must pay the $10 bus fee.  Students will wear their choir t-shirt and pants and will NOT be with an assigned chaperone.  Permission slips and medical information will be held in the nurses station across from Ghost Rider.

Financials

We are looking pretty solid for this time of the year, but we have a very expensive season coming up.  We need to make sure that our concert brings in as much revenue as possible, and if you haven’t paid your dues or requested a scholarship, please consider making a partial donation. Everything helps.  Our major upcoming expenses include, bussing, competition payments and our live band.

Room Renovations

We have finally gotten approval to use Prop 28 funds to install new cabinets in the choir room.  These will hold costumes we are currently wearing, and each choir will have their own closet to help us stay organized.  Boosters will be purchasing new shoe cubbies for the dance room.  We are currently using Amazon boxes and free stuff I found on the sidewalk in my neighborhood.  I’m very excited to set up our new recording studio courtesy of LAEF.  They have purchased all of the equipment, and we are in the process of clearing out the room so we can start setting that up.  I’m hoping to have the students recording by the end of the 3rd quarter.

Pictures and Costume Closet

We did ensemble pictures, buddy pictures, and individual pictures last Friday.  Thank you to Scott and Rick for taking that on.  We are looking for a couple people to help Rick take action shots of the students on Monday, Feb. 10th at dress rehearsal.  All of these will be loaded onto Pixie Set and available for purchase.  Please add your name to the sign up genius if you can help on the 10th.

Aileen has been hard at work with her team organizing in the costume closet.  She usually comes in for about an hour when she has time and just gets done what she can.  If you have an hour here and there and like to fold and organize, shoot me an email, and I’ll get you in touch with her.  She is also looking for reusable vacuum bags for storage.  If you happen to have some you’re not using, send them in!

Costumes

Costumes are purchased by the boosters and saved from year to year to be reused.  This allows us to save money on dues and insure that every student looks their best.  Please make sure your child is storing their costume appropriately.  Things should be hung up or folded nicely.  Laundering is your responsibility, and please be careful when doing so.  We need your help getting our alterations finished.  Studio and Sound Waves girls needing alterations should be taking their dresses to Sunset Cleaners this week OR you can do it yourself if you are able.  I need to recruit 4-5 people who can hem using a sewing machine to work on the alterations for the boys costumes.  They are wearing jumpsuits, and we need to hem the sleeves and pants for several of the boys.  If we get enough help, you would only need to do a handful.  Mrs. Schwartz is loaning us a machine so you can work here at the school or take them home.

Outside of Class Rehearsal

We’ve scheduled rehearsal on Monday, Feb. 3 (Studio and Soul Men) and Wednesday, Feb. 5th (Sound Waves).  We are looking for one parent from each group to organize snacks for these rehearsals.  You would get your purchase approved, purchase the snacks and bring them to the school.  Save receipts and the boosters will reimburse. Add your name to the Sign Up Genius, and send me an email when you know what you want to bring.

Competitions

The students LOVE competing!  Every year on the end of the year survey, they tell me competition and Knott’s were the funnest activities they did.  The show choir community is a really great group, and the kids really enjoy seeing other schools do what they do.  I enjoy it because it really pushes the kids to be their best knowing that professionals will be watching them and awarding points.  It can be frustrating as it is a very subjective sport.  But we try to keep it all in perspective and just focus on giving the best performance we can.  Students in Studio Singers, Sound Waves, and Soul Men are required to attend competition.   Not attending will not only affect their grade, but the integrity of the group.  No one sits the bench in choir, and we need everyone there.  Parents are encouraged to attend as well, and information will be sent out on how to purchase tickets to each event.  Sixth Sense families are encouraged to attend to not only support, but to get a preview into what is to come.  As with everything, I expect our students and families to represent McAuliffe and the choir program well.  We are respectful, positive, and prepared always.

Auditions

We will be having auditions for next year’s choir in April.  I do not have specific dates yet.  All students will audition, regardless of their plans for next year.  They will receive a completion grade for turning in all parts of the audition.  We will go over the requirements in class and rehearse so students feel comfortable.  They will submit their sight reading and vocal audition via video on Google Classroom.  Those wishing to audition for Studio Singers will attend an in-person dance audition as well.

CHOIR 2025

Hello Choir Families,

Welcome back!  It’s been a tiresome week trying to get back in our routine and sing amidst all of the smoke and ash.  But the kids are doing great and we got a lot done.  We have 4 weeks until our concert and we are working hard to get everything done.  Big shout out to all of the parents helping with props, costumes, and pictures.  We could not pull this off without you.

Costumes in Class on Monday

Students need to have their garment/duffle bag in class on Monday so we can distribute costumes and be ready for pictures on Friday.  Girls should include their proper undergarments in the bag so they don’t forget Friday.  Boys need their black boots.  We are going to start practicing in them during class.  Some of them have not been dancing full out because they don’t want to crease their shoes 🙁 Studio Singers needing alterations should wait until after pictures Friday and take their dress in next weekend to make sure it’s ready in time for our show in February.

Choir Pictures

The students will be taking choir yearbook pictures on Friday January 17th during class.  They will also take individuals and buddy pictures.  These will be available for purchase and we will let you know how to order them.  Students must have their costumes and shoes in class on this day.

Scott Smeltzer will be taking the all group photos (thank you Scott)  and we are looking for a few photographers to help with individuals and buddy pictures.  It would be 8:45-11:20 and again at  1:30-2:20.  Scott will set up all the lights so you just need your camera.

Please email me at shwallace@losal.org if you are available to help with that.

Alex in Soul Men

The boys had a great time working with Alex today!  He is a guest choreographer who is currently dancing for Disney and is an alumni of both McAuliffe and LAHS choir programs.  We are excited to have him back working with us again.

Knott’s Information

A flyer for the Knott’s Berry Farm performance will be handed out in class on Monday!  But, you can register online this weekend. This is an optional performance and students will miss school that day.  Our performance will be at 11:30 on the Wagon Camp stage and students will have the rest of the day to play on their own in the park.  Tickets are $45, bus fee is $10, and the optional meal/drink pass is $45.  Students who have a 2025 Knott’s pass may use that instead of purchasing the $45 ticket, but all students must pay the $10 bus fee.

Outside of Class Rehearsals

For our next concert and competition the students will be performing with a professional band accompanying them.  For this reason, our band leader will be joining the students in class the week of Feb. 3rd so she can start rehearsing the band.  Students will rehearse with the band at dress rehearsal on Feb. 10th and we will have a pick up rehearsal on March 12th for the students who are competing on the 13th.

THIS WEEK IN CHOIR

Happy Holidays! Enjoy Your Break

Happy Holidays!  I am headed to Kansas for a much-needed visit with the family.  I hope all of you are able to relax a bit over the next two weeks as well.  The kids are doing great, and I’m sure would be happy to perform for you at any family functions you attend. 😂

The calendar has many updates this week, so please take a look and adjust your home calendar accordingly.

Choir Pictures

The students will be taking choir yearbook pictures on Friday January 17th during class.  They will also take individuals and buddy pictures.  These will be available for purchase and we will let you know how to order them.  Students must have their costumes and shoes in class on this day.  Most students have them here already but they need to be placed in garment bags.  And we still have a few missing their shoes.

Scott Smeltzer will be taking the all group photos (thank you Scott)  and we are looking for a few photographers to help with individuals and buddy pictures.  It would be 8:45-11:20 and again at  1:30-2:20.  Scott will set of all the lights so you just need your camera.

Please email me at shwallace@losal.org if you are available to help with that.

Sound Check Shout Out!

Sound Check wrapped their 5th seasonal concert last night.  They have done a fantastic job representing the program this season.  Their musicianship and professionalism at such a young age is very inspiring to our community.  We are all very proud of you!

Alex in Soul Men

When we return from break, Soul Men will welcome a new choreographer Alex!  He will teach the boys one of their numbers for competition.  Alex is currently dancing for Disney and is an alumni of both McAuliffe and LAHS choir programs.  We are excited to have him back working with us again.

All District Choral Festival

We finally have a date!  This will take place at Cottonwood on Monday March 10th.  You won’t want to miss this event.  I’ll send ticket information as soon as I have it.
